(Exclusive Excerpt):
The stragglers hurried on to attack the disabled sleighs, and women collapsed, screaming up to the sky.   But the sleighs were on course again, the army was escaping with screaming children and toddlers, as men with weapons gathered, and appeared to scheme for nearby transport.
But there was none.
“My child!    My child!”    There was a lone woman screaming on the ice.  She clawed at her neck and her hands shook and convulsed.  Georgeonus flew toward her, and her screams became louder and more desperate.   She seemed to be aware of no one else around as her panic carried through the air.    Her hands shook, and as Georgeonus and Nadia landed, her eyes and head rolled backwards.   Nadia felt her own boots landing on the ice, and she ran toward the woman, who now fell backwards.  Nadia slipped, she was not used to the shoes.  She lunged toward the woman, sending her body under the woman’s back, but heard a clunk on the ice as the woman’s head hit with impact.

Nadia lifted the woman’s shoulders onto her lap.  She felt tears brimming in her eyes as she looked at her unconscious face.   She felt the blood on her hands and in the woman’s hair, saw it streaming down along the ice.   She looked up at Georgeonus, who watched the men gather.    Some were shouting, but most were organizing.  The woman was carted away immediately.

“Jasper!” a woman cried.   Great crowds had assembled around them, and the people in torn linen were running every which way.  A petite woman ran up to a large, tall perspiring man, who had a tear on his cheek.  With great reaching effort she kissed his chin, and was no match for his height.   He looked down at a package she handed him.  Nadia recognized him as the one they had met earlier.   Soon there were two sleds upon the scene, and supplies were being packed.  Nadia scanned the crowd, trying to locate the woman whose head she had held.    Some women stared at Nadia, clothed in the metal, and taking their remaining children by their hands, led them away.
